One concern physical therapists have before deciding to travel is “How will I make friends if I move to a new place every 13 weeks?” It’s a valid question especially if you’re traveling solo. You’re moving to a new place, starting a new job, and often don’t know a single person. But the truth is, being a travel PT can actually make it easier to meet people if you’re intentional.

Here are some of the best ways to build a social circle while on assignment:

1. Join a Group Workout Class

One of the fastest ways to meet people is through fitness communities. Group classes naturally create repeated interactions, and you’re surrounded by people with similar interests.

This could include:

  • CrossFit gyms

  • Pilates

  • OrangeTheory/F45

  • Yoga studios

  • Run clubs

  • Climbing gyms

I started CrossFit when I started traveling, and I’ve met a lot of people! Even if you only attend 2–3 times per week, you’ll start recognizing faces quickly; especially if you go at the same class time each day. You see the same members regularly, workouts create conversation naturally, and many gyms do social events outside the gym. My husband joined a local softball team, which not only helped him meet new people but also gave him a strong sense of community.

2. Find a Church or Faith Community

Churches are one of the most welcoming environments for newcomers. Many have:

  • Young adult groups

  • Small groups

  • Volunteer opportunities

  • Social events

  • Community dinners

This makes it easy to meet people outside of work in a relaxed setting. You don’t need to attend forever. Many churches are welcoming to people who will only be in the area temporarily! Even going for a few months during an assignment can help you build meaningful connections.

3. Go to Trivia Nights

Trivia nights are underrated for meeting people. They’re:

  • Low pressure

  • Social by nature

  • Easy to join

  • Usually weekly

If you go consistently, you’ll start seeing the same teams each week. Arriving alone? You might get seated with a friendly team.

This is one of the easiest ways to casually meet people without it feeling forced.

4. Talk to your coworkers

Your coworkers already know:

  • The best restaurants

  • Local events

  • Social groups

  • Things to do

Even if they have families, many are still happy to:

  • Invite you out

  • Introduce you to friends

  • Recommend local communities

Don’t be afraid to say:

  • “I’m new to the area, anything fun to do around here?”

  • “Do people from work ever grab food after?”

  • “Any good trivia nights or gyms nearby?”

Most people are happy to help, especially when they know you’re only in town temporarily.

Also, many assignments will have another traveler working there. This is often one of the easiest people to connect with because you're likely in a similar stage of life. You will have a lot in common, like flexible schedules, exploring a new city, and wanting to meet people.

Final Thoughts

Meeting new people can feel intimidating, but chances are many others are in the same position and also hoping to make new connections.

Some of the easiest ways to meet people are:

  • Join a group workout class

  • Find a church or community group

  • Attend trivia nights

  • Connect with coworkers

  • Say yes to invites

  • Go to the same places consistently

Travel physical therapy isn’t just about exploring new cities, it’s also an opportunity to build friendships all over the country.

And many travel PTs find that the people they meet along the way end up being one of the best parts of travel therapy.
